Split

Split is the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia, located on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. It is a focal point in terms of transport and a popular tourist destination, linked to the Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula. Its name most likely comes from the Latin and Italian words for “Palace” for the fact that it encompasses grandiose palace grounds which are a part of Split's historical city center. Diocletian's Palace, the retirement home of the Roman emperor Diocletian, is along with the medieval suburbs of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace dates back to the 3rd century AD and has transformed over the centuries into an inhabited fortress, which has been shaped from the influences of different inhabitants and conquerors- Roman, Ottoman and Venetian. Today it is a lively square with many cafés. The Podrumi, the impressive and beautifully restored cellars of the palace are now used for stands selling souvenir.

Split is also the art and culture center of central Dalmatia with its numerous concerts, museums and galleries which include internationally renowned masterpieces, such as works of the artist Ivan Mestrovic with his most famous piece, the Statue of Gregory of Nin being a landmark of the city which brings good luck for those who rub the big toe of the bishop. Diocletian's Palace during the summer turns into a huge outdoor stage, where actors and performers show up. The high-profile festival includes various music scenes, from opera to contemporary music, performance art and film. The festival takes place every summer in the historic old town. Split wouldn’t lack a vibrant nightlife scene. The numerous bars and clubs in the city center, on the Riva promenade and on the beaches in and around Split all invite you to enjoy summer by relaxing and partying to the sounds of international top DJs.

Split's prime location on the peninsula is also part of the reason why its landscape is so appealing since one can enjoy the charm of the city and at the same time enjoy an evening in one of the many beach-located open air clubs, or taste a nice glass of local wine paired with a superb fish meal. Split will lead its visitors to charming places like Primosten, Omis, Sibenik and Trogir. Also close to Split is the Krka National Park whose waterfalls invite visitors to a refreshing experience.
