The town keeps its authentic character and traditions and is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Kissamos which used to be the commercial centre of western Crete. Kissamos has strong fortification walls that Venetians built in order to protect it from intruders. Today remains of the castle can still be seen in Kissamos. The Venetian fortress called Castello is the landmark of Kissamos and is built at the top of the settlement. Churches, monasteries and beautiful mansions are also part of the area are also worth exploring.
Transportation is via regular local buses that connect Kissamos to Chania town while ferries depart from the port of Kissamos to various destinations of Peloponnese and the island of Kythira which can be combined in your vacation.
