Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands are located on the western side of Greece and are historically and culturally strongly connected to Italy with many evident elements of this. The architecture of the capital towns, including Corfu Town, Zakynthos Town and Argostoli, resembles a lot to the Venetian style as these islands were occupied by the Venetians in the medieval times. Another striking characteristic of Ionian Greece is the lush green nature and the aquamarine beaches with white soft sand. Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Lefkada are the most popular holiday islands. The Ionian islands also embrace an amazing music and dance tradition.

Popular Areas in the Ionian Islands

Among the most popular and award-winning regions are the stunning beaches of Lefkada – Engremni, Porto Katsiki, Kathisma – and the Shipwreck beach on Zante which is globally famous. Voutoumi and Vrika on Antipaxi are preferred by boat owners, while in Schinos of Ithaca you will find all the elite. Myrtos, of Kefalonia framed by towering cliffs, is one of the most photographed beaches of Greece and beyond. Then there’s Kaladi on Kythera, and of course Corfu’s postcard beauty, Paleokastritsa. The Ionian Islands have countless other large and small beaches, with a full range of facilities and watersports.

Things to do in the Ionian Islands

There are a handful of monasteries and mountain villages to explore, waterfalls to bathe in, hiking trails and scenic routes to cross. Nature lovers can visit the wetlands for birdwatching or the marine parks for monk seals and Loggerhead turtles. As for sailing or cruising, there’s no better place than the Ionian with its favorable winds. Kite and windsurfers consider the Ionian as the prime location for their sports.

In Lefkada, you will find one of the most imposing medieval buildings in Greece and the island’s most significant attraction, the stunning 14th-century castle of Santa Maura and various baroque churches. Your first stop in Kefalonia should be Assos a stunning hamlet with a Venetian castle on top, then Fiscardo is the most picturesque and cosmopolitan port. The caves of Drogarati which is 150 million years old, and Melissani, with its underground lake, are unique nature miracles.

On Zante, the Shipwreck bay will leave you speechless. It was on this island where Greece’s first marine park was established where the rare Caretta-Caretta sea turtles lay their eggs. For endless nightlife fun, visit the area of Laganas.

The town of Corfu with its cobbled paved alleys, the Liston Arcade, the Spianada – the largest square in the Balkans- and dozens of buildings and monuments left by Venetian, French and British rulers compose a unique scenery of incredible beauty. A must-see is the Achilleion palace of Austrian princess Sissy.

In Lefkada long lives the legend of shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Here among the most breathtaking sights is the lighthouse at Cape Lefkada and Sappho’s Leap, while the most popular is the Faneromeni monastery. Traditional Agios Nikitas on the west coast is another favorite, dotted with amazing beaches.

Paxi is among the greener islands where the color enters the sea to create pieces of paradise. Here the castle of Ai Nikolas, renovated by Venetians in 1510 according to plans by Leonardo da Vinci himself is the most famous attraction on the island.

Family fun in the Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands are children friendly with long sandy beaches where everyone can enjoy the sun and the sea with various water sport activities, such as snorkeling to their colorful seabed. The islands’ rich architecture and nature provide endless trekking and exploration opportunities and their historical treasures hosted in museums, or outdoor sights will enrich and enchant younger and older visitors.
