Popular areas in Akrotiri.

Akrotiri is the most important archeological site of Santorini for the fact that it used to be a Minoan settlement which was destroyed around 1600 BC due to a devastating volcanic eruption. Many tour boats arrive in Akrotiri and tourists disembark at the nearby beaches. A sight not to be missed is the Venetian castle. The outstanding frescoes of the ancient city of Akrotiri can only be seen in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Akrotiri has plenty of churches worth visiting and among the most special ones is the church of Agios Nikolaos built right above the impressive reddish rocks of the Red Beach. In Akrotiri, you will find some lovely hotels and also many tasty taverns with a beautiful sea view and local fresh ingredients. From the top of the village, you can see most of the island, the caldera, and miles of grapes.

Things to do in Akrotiri

In Akrotiri, the wooden footbridges allow you to walk in the city. Here you will admire the ancient buildings, the streets and many ceramics. Akrotiri has the two best beaches on the island Red Beach and Vlichada and is quite close to the popular Perissa and Perivolas beaches too. Within the volcano crater is the Caldera Beach which you get by going down a series of switchbacks from the top of the caldera.

Family fun in Akrotiri

Akrotiri or else the “Greek Pompei” due to its ancient ruins which were covered by ash is an ideal destination for families with children. Here you will enjoy the ancient ruins, or you can go for a swim at the nearby famous beaches, stroll around the quiet village and eat like a local at a small tavern. The people here are friendly and the village is ideal for endless moments of games on its streets. You can always take the boat and explore the nearby beaches or go to Fira and Imerovigli to enjoy the amazing greek sunset.
