Cook Islands

The Cook Islands is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. It comprises 15 islands with a total land area of 240 square kilometers. The Cook Islands lie north-east of New Zealand, between French Polynesia and Fiji. Nowadays, the population is less than 20,000, although many more Cook Islanders live in New Zealand.

The Cook Islands are divided into two distinct groups of coral atolls: the Southern Cook Islands and the Northern Cook Islands. The Southern Cook Islands were predominantly created by volcanic activity and they are quite hilly. The majority of the population lives in the Southern group. The Cook Islands are very popular as they offer a range of things to do for the whole family.

Popular Areas in the Cook Islands

Rarotonga and Aitutaki are the main tourist magnets. Rarotonga is the visible tip of a volcanic cone and is the largest of the Cook Islands. Its beautiful capital, Avarua, is the commercial and cultural center of these islands. Embellished in the surrounding lush peaks lies a coastal plain where coconut palms, papaya, bananas, and coffee plants flourish.

Things to do in the Cook Islands

Go snorkeling in Maiana of Aitutaki Lagoon which is one of the main attractions or explore it by kayak. You will be amazed by the rich marine life. Visit Tapuaetai or One Foot Island as it is most commonly known. This is the place that will make your tropical fantasies come true, ideal for beach lovers. Swim in Muri beach, one of the most popular and picturesque beaches on the island where snorkelers admire many species of tropical fish. Titikaveka Beach in Rarotonga has among the clearest waters and you can even see the fish by just standing in the lagoon.

Apart from the sea adventures, a perfect way to get to know the traditions of this paradise is to visit Te Vara Nui Village. Coconut husking, cooking, fishing, dancing, carving, weaving, and Maori bush medicine are just some of the activities you can get familiar with.

If you are a nature lover, Cross-Island Hike to Te Rua Manga in Rarotonga is a great way to explore Rarotonga's inconceivably verdant scenery. The trail leads from the north coast up to the distinctive pinnacle rock Te Rua Manga and then via Wigmore's Waterfall to the south coast. Maire Nui Gardens, Rarotonga will open up a colorful blossom with a great range of tropical flowers whose sweet fragrance enhances the sense of this beautiful paradise.

Do not miss out on Avarua, the capital with its layback vibe.

Family fun in the Cook Islands

The Cook Islands are going to be great fun for the whole family! Visit the Aroa Marine Reserve, where your little ones will be enchanted by the colorful marine creatures.

Tikioki Marine Reserve is an ideal environment for beginner snorkelers so you might want to give it a try. All in all, the beaches here provide a safe environment for families to enjoy the sun and the most tropical adventures.
